i've been reading a book about US history and i'm up to the early 1900's and 1920's, which were the times charles atlas was coming up. the conditions under which he lived were SHOCKING! people working 70 or more hour weeks in sweat shops with NO VENTILATION! smoke everywhere. people living in crowded immigrant slums.
it was then i realized the true value of his exercises: helping people to breathe better and be stronger to bear their daily life. looking out the window and taking a deep breath gives one hope. having a stronger body gives one the ability to get thru the day a little better.
those times were also extremely competitive. there was an extreme emphasis on upward mobility. the health of many human beings was scarificed on this altar.
charlie taught people to take control of their lives thru health. he taught them that to be rich in health was more important, that it's actually thru HEALTH that the other forms of wealth even have a chance to come to us.

as an old arab proverb says:
"he who has health has hope. and he who has hope has everything"

When examining Charles Atlas and DT, one must always keep in mind the context of the times in which he lived and developed his body and DT. Doing this will assist in gaining a proper understanding of the man and his course.
