Today my sister was over and she wondered if we had a spare phone book, we checked and had a bunch of old one's. I have one that's like 2" thick but taking the 1" phone book announced that I would tear it in half, and I did. That was my first phone book tear.
At work on the job site after the foundations have been formed and remove, I find metal rods about a foot long, 1/4" X 1/8 with rounded edges. They're great for bending and when you have the U shape, makes a good hand exerciser that is quite springy.
